(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Marijuana users take more risks behind the wheel, a new survey from the AAA suggests.

Research from the automobile safety and travel group says drivers who consume cannabis tend to text while driving, speed, run red lights and drive more aggressively.

AAA representative Nick Jarmusz told CBS 58 Milwaukee the effect of marijuana can be similar to that of alcohol.

“We’re not saying that marijuana is more dangerous,” he said. “As far as we know they create a similar level of impairment and danger, although it’s a different type of impairment, in some ways.”

Jarmusz said some people may think marijuana makes them a better driver, but research indicates it can inhibit concentration, slow reaction times and cloud judgment.
