CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The DuPage County Board is starting the once-a-decade process of redrawing the boundaries of maps used to elect County officials. It's having an open house at the County Administration Building in Wheaton Wednesday from 4 to 6 pm.
Boundaries of the six DuPage County Board districts determine who gets to vote for whom and every 10 years the maps are supposed to be redrawn to account for population shifts and such.
Board member Jim Zay, who chairs the redistricting committee, said officials are now giving residents a look at the existing maps and inviting suggestions for change. The board will vote on new maps by Dec. 31.
Zay said he doesn't expect a partisan fight, after all, the county has proven it can make changes without new maps.
"Ten years ago, the county board had the Republican majority. And now as we go, you know, starting this new process, there's a democratic majority. So, again, it doesn't matter how they're drawn. It's just how the people are voting and who's doing a better job of getting their voters to the polls," Zay told WBBM Newsradio.
People who can't get to an open house can go to the county website, DuPageco.org, and click on redistricting.
