ELGIN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - U.S. Senator Dick Durbin is sounding only slightly optimistic about the chance for gun control legislation in Congress after the Uvalde school shooting.
The majority whip said text updates he’s getting from Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy on negotiations have him believing they’ll find agreement on something but not as much as Durbin would like to see.
“It would start with eliminating assault weapons. I see no reason why an 18-year-old has to own a weapon that can kill so many people, so viciously, in such a short period of time,” Durbin said.
The democrat was speaking at an environmental event in Elgin on Wednesday and added that the popular AR 15 rifles are “miserable weapons.”
“They have no sport or hunting purpose whatsoever. They are just shredding machines that kill victims in the most unspeakable ways,” Durbin said.
He pointed to gun bans and proposals in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and England after mass shootings there, saying he hopes people in this country stand up and say they’ve had enough.
