CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — There were a few sparks Friday at a City Council committee hearing on a proposal to rename Lake Shore Drive in honor of the Chicago's founding father.
During the Transportation Committee hearing, Ald. Edward Burke (14th) asked how many people would be affected by renaming the drive for Jean Baptiste Point DuSable
City Transportation Commissioner Gia Biaggi said some 12,000 residences would be affected. People might have to change their addresses and official documents, she said.
Burke said that would be an unprecedented undertaking.
But sponsoring Ald. David Moore (17th) pointed out backers only want to rename the outer drive and not the residential part of the thoroughfare known as the inner drive. He angrily accused Biaggi of stoking fears.
Biaggi conceded that renaming only the outer drive would have much less impact.
She says her department is still studying the impact. No vote was taken. It may be April before there's final action.
