ELGIN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Elgin residents held a candlelight vigil Sunday night for a beloved family and community member who died last week in a car crash.
If you live in Elgin, you probably know the name Rocky Lopez.
"Selfless is one word to describe him…He treated everybody equally, whether you were rich, poor. He would see you walking in the streets, and he would say hello to anyone, everyone. He was so kind and generous,” said Clarissa Zapata , Lopez’s daughter-in-law.
Lopez was killed last Wednesday night in unincorporated Dundee. He was riding a motorcycle on Binnie and Huntley Roads when he was hit by a car. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Zapata and Lopez's son Roque Lopez Jr. said, to many, Rocky was almost like a neighborhood celebrity.
“People that have never met him, everybody's saying they felt like they knew him…It's tough…We lost somebody good, and these are people that never met him, which is crazy that he had that effect,” Lopez Jr. said.
To Lopez Jr., his dad was one of a kind.
"You don't come across people with that same vibe often at all. It's a very unique vibe, and that's why people don’t forget him…People will always remember, just how he was. He didn’t have to try. It was effortless,” Lopez Jr. said.
