(WBBM NEWSRADIO) —A 31-year-old Elgin man drowned over the weekend after trying to help one of his children in a southeast Wisconsin lake.

A variety of police rescue agencies from northern Illinois and the Geneva Lake, Wisconsin area responded Sunday evening to a distress call near Big Foot Beach on Geneva Lake.

Police found passengers in a boat who told them that an adult male was missing in the water. Authorities learned Antonio F. Delasancha Jr. had been operating the boat and pulling his children on a tube.

Earlier, his 11-year-old son had jumped in the water and began to drift away and struggle, even though he was wearing a personal floatation device, Geneva Lake Police said. The father jumped in, without a life preserver, to help the boy but went under.

Authorities said the elder Delasancha drowned in 45 feet of water. His body was not recovered until Monday morning, police said.
