CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A new Save A Lot store was supposed to have a soft opening Thursday in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, but it’s been put on hold following pressure from the community.
The Save A Lot at 63rd and Halsted Streets would replace a Whole Foods, which moved out of the Englewood community after just six years there.
On Wednesday, protesters convinced Save A Lot to hold off opening until its owners meet with the community to talk about what the store will provide. There are a lot of residents, including Darlene Green, who said they think there’s a big step-down in quality in what Save A Lot offers.
“Like: ‘They’re in Englewood, so they don’t deserve fresh fruits and vegetables and stuff — they’ll take what you give them,’” Green told CBS 2.
Green said she won’t shop there and added that she can’t afford to “feed this to my grandson.”
Ald. Stephanie Coleman (16th) told CBS 2 that the residents of Englewood don’t feel they’re being heard.
The owners of Save A Lot said they’ll meet with the community to try to see how they can give residents what they’re looking for.
