A man who allegedly committed a murder and escaped from a private prisoner transport service in Gary has been caught after two weeks on the run.
Lake County Indiana Sheriff Oscar Martinez said the suspect — 22-year-old Leon Taylor — was arrested in East Chicago, Ind. Wednesday morning by members of his tactical team after a brief foot chase.
Taylor’s escape at a McDonald’s drive-thru Dec. 14 was caught on surveillance video. He was seen opening the back door of an SUV and running off.
His guard initially claimed Taylor asked him to open the window and he climbed out. Taylor was wanted for a murder in East Chicago and had been extradited from Texas. He was being transported from O’Hare to the Lake County jail in Crown Point, Ind. when the escape occurred.
The sheriff said authorities utilized a wide variety of resources to track down Taylor.
“Our officers worked around the clock over the Christmas holiday and investigated every possible lead to bring this fugitive back into custody,” Martinez said in a social-media posting Wednesday morning.
