(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Evanston City Council has decided to put off a decision on whether to ban businesses from going cashless.
John Hammerschlag told council members he’s been in the parking business for 45 years and that all his facilities are cashless….
“Cash in a business creates all kinds of operating obstacles. It’s more expensive, much more expensive to handle cash,” he said.
But sponsoring Council Member Devon Reid said the measure would protect the 5% of the population who do not have bank accounts.
“We need a solution immediately,” Reid said.
Council member Krissie Harris said the city should look into setting up cash-to-credit kiosks so that businesses can be cashless if they choose.
In the end, the council decided to wait until January to discuss the issue further.
