(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The new Mayor of Evanston is already moving on his first initiative: re-thinking the way policing is done in the north suburb.
Even before being sworn in Monday, Daniel Biss had assembled a Reimagining Public Safety Committee to look at everything Evanston does to keep people safe.
He said it’s a panel of people with different backgrounds and perspectives, discussing matters of policing, spending, policies and race. As such, Biss said he expects emotional debate.
He’ll chair the panel.
“What do we do about the disparate impact of policing tactics on Black and Brown communities, compared with white communities? These are questions of how do we create true, equal justice in our society?”
Biss wants recommendations by the fall, so that they may be incorporated in the next city budget.
Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss is the guest on “At Issue,” airing 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
