CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A former assistant chief in the Cook County Sheriff’s office has filed an age discrimination lawsuit against his old boss.

After decades of work for the Sheriff’s office and the Chicago Police Department before that, Ronald Gaines, 69, said he sees his termination in March as a personal attack his integrity.

“I never got a chance to do one more roll call, to tell them what I thought of the men and women of EM, what a great group of officers they were,” Gaines said.

Attorney Cass Casper said in investigating the Gaines’ lawsuit, they found a pattern by Sheriff’s office executive director Carmen Ruffin.

“Mr. Gaines will be vindicated of the age discrimination that he suffered as a result of this injustice,” Casper said.

The Sheriff’s office said Gaines was fired because he left work for hours on more than one occasion without permission or notification and then refused to cooperate with an internal investigation.

The office denies it had anything to do with his age.
