CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - It was a 2-11 alarm fire in a building that was once retail space and had been converted into a church.

Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford said the fire started in the center of the building — and later, the roof came down.

"The building structure was so poor that, as far as its condition, we did not have any firefighters go inside," he said.

Langford said one firefighter was taken to hospital as a precaution because his vital signs were "a little high."

Monday’s extra-alarm fire followed two Chicago firefighter deaths last week.

“It's on everybody's mind,” Langford said. “Everyone's thinking about that. When you have another extra-alarm fire in a building like this, everyone is very cautious and mindful [of] where everybody is and what they're doing.”

Firefighters, and the Chicago Buildings Department, remained on the scene even after the fire on Archer was out.
