OAK LAWN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - At nearly two dozen schools in Illinois Wednesday, police were called to fake reports of active shooters. Some happened in the Chicago area.
The fake threats came in even Wednesday night when events were going on. That’s what happened in Oak Lawn Community High School. Police said there were two separate events going on when a call was made by a man who claimed he was inside the school and was going to start shooting.
Police converged on the school and secured the building. No threat was found.
Similar so-called “swatting threats” were made at Whitney Young High School in Chicago and Rockford East High School. Illinois State Police said, as of 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, they had received 21 calls about fake active shooter threats in schools in 19 counties.
