CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Federal authorities seized several bogus DEA and FBI badges that arrived here from China.
Officials with U.S. Customs and Border Protections intercepted the fakes Aug. 13 and 15 at the Chicago International Mail Branch, a news release said.
The feds seized eight DEA badges and one FBI badge. The parcels they were in were destined for locations across the U.S., officials said.
“These counterfeit badges could have led to disastrous consequences if our officers had not found them,” LaFonda Sutton-Burke, director of Chicago field operations, said in the news release. “Criminal organizations could have used these badges for their illicit activity under the guise of federal agents."
CBP regularly intercepts narcotics, weapons, currency, prohibited agriculture products, counterfeit goods and other illicit items at 328 international ports of entry in the U.S.
