CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Following an environmental review, the Federal Aviation Administration has greenlit a multibillion-dollar expansion at O'Hare Airport.

The project is known as the Terminal Area Plan, or TAP.

It will include the construction of two new satellite concourses, as well as construction of what's being called the O'Hare Global Terminal, which will replace Terminal Two.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot said TAP has the potential for much more than simply modernizing O'Hare.

"Not only do airport enhancements put our city on the map as a global transportation hub,” the mayor said. “But this work brings countless benefits to our entire city, especially our underserved communities."

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said new jobs also mean a lot for economic growth, too.

"We're living in a time when folks understand more and more the importance of our airports for supply chains, as well as for passenger travel,” Buttigieg said. “And we've got to make sure both of those are running as efficiently as possible."

Chicago Department of Aviation Commissioner Jamie Rhee said the O’Hare Global Terminal will double the existing space in Terminal Two and will be “one of the most transformative terminal investments in America.”

TAP is one component of O'Hare 21, a long-term program aimed at putting O'Hare in a better position to serve people in the 21st century.
