(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — There’s a new wrinkle in the federal racketeering conspiracy case against former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, and it involves evidence from a civil case filed years ago.

The Chicago Tribune reports federal authorities have asked for transcripts of a deposition Madigan and his then-chief of staff, Timothy Mapes, gave in a suit filed by a former 2016 primary challenger named Jason Gonzales.

Ray Long, one of the Tribune reporters who wrote the story, said Gonzales accused the former speaker of using dirty tricks to defeat him.

He lost the case, but the feds are interested in the deposition. Long says it is believed to be the only statement Madigan has ever given under oath.

The FBI won’t say why it wants the transcripts.

Long is the author of the newly published book, The House that Madigan Built. It came out as the once-untouchable former lawmaker — for years considered the most powerful elected official in Illinois — was charged by the feds.

Long is the guest on this weekend’s “At Issue,” which airs 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
