CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Field Museum is partnering with locally-based Two Brothers Coffee Roasters on a coffee blend that’s part of history.

Experts at the Field Museum said the art of coffee dates to 850 AD in Yemen, before slowly being discovered and cultivated throughout the world. Then, roughly 900 years after that original discovery, the first known blend, Arabian Mokha Java, was produced by combining coffees from Yemen and Indonesia.

Fast forward to today, over 300 years later, Two Brothers Coffee Roasters and the Field Museum have partnered to mimic the original, with beans from the same regions, creating "history in a cup."

“We are very excited to be able to partner with Two Brothers again to create a coffee that highlights one of our many collections and allows you to ‘taste’ a part of history,” said Megan Williams, Director of Business Enterprises for the Field Museum, in a statement.

According to the Field Museum, the idea was born out of a long-standing relationship between Two Brothers and the museum, who have collaborated on other products in the past. The Field Museum invited the Two Brothers Coffee Roasters’ team to a behind-the-scenes tour of ancient artifacts relating to coffee origins, which inspired the overall project and blend.

“We are very proud to team with the Field Museum to offer this historically relevant coffee,” said Mason Brown, Director of Coffee and Tea for Two Brothers Coffee Roasters, in a statement. “We set out to create a coffee that paid homage to the first-known blend while putting a modern spin on it for a complete coffee experience. And we’ve done just that.”

The team named the blend Fossil Fuel. It is described as a medium roast blend, featuring naturally processed coffees from Ethiopia and Papua New Guinea – the same general regions from which the original was born. The blend features notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, raspberry, raisin, and dried fruit. It is also described as a "heavy body and sweet, lingering finish mount a complex, wild, and timeless cup that serves as a looking glass to the beginnings of coffee culture."

In addition to creating a historical blend, Two Brothers Coffee Roasters and the Field Museum collaborated to find a name and look that best represented Chicago’s iconic museum.

“The Field Museum has one of the greatest collections of fossils in the world, including the iconic SUE the T. rex,” Williams said in a statement. “We wanted a name that celebrates the energy and excitement SUE brings to our fans every day.”

Set to release on Oct. 25, Fossil Fuel will be available at the Field Museum, both on-site in the Field Bistro and in 12-ounce retail bags at all Field Museum store locations and online, as well as at its O’Hare Airport Terminal 1 retail location. It will also be for sale at both Two Brothers’ locations, Two Brothers Coffee Roasters’ online store, and select retailers throughout the Chicagoland area.
