(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Police in south suburban Oak Lawn have announced the final arrests in a violent home invasion that occurred nearly one year ago.

In March 2022, three suspects forced their way into the home of a 71-year-old woman on South Kenton and ransacked the residence while one of the invaders brandished a gun. The woman reportedly suffered minor injuries.

A 15-year-old suspect was arrested weeks after the crime, but only this year have police tracked down two men believed to have been involved.

In January, an FBI task force arrested 31-year-old Gregory Smith at an apartment in Chicago. He was charged with the home invasion and 23 additional felonies, including unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, police said.

This week, 31-year-old Anthony Mitchell of Chicago was arrested in Houston, Texas after a 40-minute police chase and crash, officials said. He awaits extradition back to Illinois.

“Our Village board and administration are in lock-step when it comes to crimes committed in Oak Lawn, especially violent crime,” Oak Lawn Mayor Terry Vorderer said in a news release announcing the arrests. “We will spare no expense to bring perpetrators to justice.”
