(WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Chicago Public Schools’ remote, first-day attendance went down more than 10 percent compared to 2019, when students showed up for in-person classes.

First day attendance this year was 84.2%, while last year’s was 94.2%.

This year, CPS students are not in schools but learning remotely as they have done since the spring because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite the drop, Schools CEO Janice Jackson says in a statement that she is proud of the staff “and school communities who have been working tirelessly over the summer to ensure families had what they need to log-in on day one.”

CPS says more students logged in as this week of remote learning went on.

Second-day attendance was 88.5%. Third day, 90.2%.
