First female CPD officer dies in line of duty in 21 years

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago police officer has died and another is in critical condition after a shooting in West Englewood Saturday night.

Supt. David Brown and Mayor Lori Lightfoot are slated to give more details during a Sunday morning press conference about the first female officer to die in the line of duty in 21 years.

It happened during a traffic stop at 63rd and Bell shortly after 9pm. Police said the officers were shot at in an exchange with three people in a car that left one suspect wounded.

First Deputy Eric Carter said this is an example of how officers put their lives above others to protect the city.

"We ask the city of Chicago to pray for both officers, their families, their fellow officers ... who are struggling with the facts of this," Carter said.

Police said two suspects, including the one who was wounded, are in custody. They are searching for a third suspect who is female.

**UPDATE: The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the fallen officer as 29-year-old Ella French from Galewood on the West Side.
