(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Florida man died Monday after he aided in the rescue of a teenage girl from Lake Michigan at a Northwest Indiana beach.
38-year-old Thomas Kenning of St. Petersburg, Florida was at Porter Beach, Monday morning, visiting with family when he saw a teenage girl struggling in the water, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said.
According to the DNR, Kenning swam to the girl, brought her to safety, but then went under water, himself, and never came back up.
Indiana State Park lifeguards soon responded to the scene and were able to pull Kenning out of the water. He was then transported to Northwest Health Hospital, where he later died.
Porter Beach is an unguarded beach and according to Porter Fire Chief Jay Craig, waves at the neighboring Indiana Dunes State Park Beach were estimated to be 3 to 5 feet.
