(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Cook County is promoting May 3 — this coming Monday — as “Restaurant Day,” as day for restaurant workers to get vaccinated against coronavirus.

The county has six mass-vaccination sites. Board President Toni Preckwinkle is encouraging restaurant workers to either make an appointment or just walk in.

“No matter which path you choose or which side of the county you live on, we have room for you,” she said. “It’s imperative that we work together to get all residents of Cook County who are eligible, vaccinated against COVID-19.”

Illinois Restaurant Association President Sam Toia stood with Preckwinkle to push for restaurant workers to get their shots.

“We were the first industry to be shut down, and probably will be one of the last industries to truly reopen and recover,” he said.

About half of all eligible residents in Cook County have received at least their first dose, said Israel Rocha, Cook County Health CEO.

“But together we still have a lot of work to do. We are now seeing a plateau in demand for vaccinations,” she said.

One veteran employee of the hospitality industry helped make the case: Ernestino Roldan, who’s worked at the East Bank Club for 29 years.

“I’m here to encourage everybody, food and beverage employees. Get a vaccine. It is very important.”
