CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The president of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) said two Chicago police officers — who were indicted for allegedly shooting an unarmed victim — were doing their jobs.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx announced the charges against the two officers on Friday. They could face a maximum of 30 years in prison.

FOP President John Catanzara talked about the charges, as well as the incident, in a video to members.

“Two of our officers were indicted by Kim Foxx for doing their job,” Catanzara said. “An active gun battle with an armed defender, and they engaged him and fired rounds, and she decided that this was criminally negligent behavior.

According to Foxx, the victim who was shot and seriously wounded was unarmed — and she said the officers fired without provocation.

The officers then exchanged gunfire with a second person.

Foxx said statements by Sgt. Christopher Liakopoulos and Officer Ruben Reynoso, who both claimed they returned fire after being shot at, contradicted the videotape evidence.

In addition to calling out Foxx, Catanzara criticized Chicago Police Supt. David Brown and other high-ranking Chicago police officials for not defending the indicted police officers.
