FOP President hopes aldermen take back control of city government; Mayor is 'not an empress'

COVID vaccine and handcuffs

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- While waiting for the courts to put a halt to Chicago's vaccine mandate, the police union is hoping the City Council will reverse it during a meeting Friday morning.

Attorneys for the Fraternal Order of Police told a judge officers are concerned about who will have access to their vaccination information and argued the city is violating police officers due process rights by putting them on unpaid leave without administrative hearings.

The judge is expected to rule on a temporary restraining order Monday morning. Meanwhile, union President John Catanzara is turning to the City Council, which is holding a special meeting Friday morning at 11 a.m.

"I just hope the Mayor realizes that she is not an empress and that aldermen start taking back control of city government, because they have the ability to do that and they should have been doing it all along," Catanzara said.

City attorneys said 31 officers have been put on no pay status, while they've seen steady compliance since issuing the order; but as soon as they enter their vaccine information into the city portal, attorney Michael Warner said they'll be reinstated with back pay.

Catanzara said about 3,000 officers have not shared their vaccine status in the city portal.
