CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The leader of the Fraternal Order of Police in Chicago is urging officers to show up at City Hall on Monday and make their voices heard regarding the mayor’s vaccination mandate.
“This is not about selfish coppers,” said FOP President John Catanzara in a video that was intended for not only police officers, but civilians, as well.
“They came up with a policy, they say here it is, take it or leave it, tough luck. That is not supposed to be the way that collective bargaining works.”
He said those put on no-pay status for refusal to comply include a mental health counsellor and a bomb dog handler working at O’Hare Airport.
That officer was told by a commander the dog would be taken away, said Cantazara.“It was an idle threat to scare the officer into compliance.”
He called the move "pathetic" said the dog belongs to the Transportation Security Administration and would only be taken away from the officer if he were to be terminated and all appeals were exhausted or he retired.
Catanzara also noted the ordinance that comes up on Monday that would require city council approval to put an employee on no-pay status.
"The ordinance is not about the police department. The ordinance is about absolute control on the fifth floor of City Hall with this mayor.
Police officers, firefighters and other city workers are fighting the mandate in both state and federal court. Motions will be heard on Monday.
