CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Tenants of a 40-unit courtyard building in the Woodlawn neighborhood say they’re withholding rent until the landlords fix numerous problems.
The tenants gathered in the courtyard of the building on the 6600 block of South Kenwood Avenue, where they aired their grievances.
Megan Franklin has lived in the building for 10 years.
"I recently went two months without a way to cook or feed my family, because a dead rat was inside of my stove," she said.
Brandi Holmes, another tenant, got a ComEd bill for $2,300 dollars and another for $1,800, but it should be about $100, she said.
“I reached out to property management to let them know like, ‘hey, something’s going on,’ and their reasoning was ‘well, you work from home so maybe you’re just over-using your electricity," Holmes said.
She said a sink that caved in was fixed with a stick that was used to prop it up. The tenants also complain about heat and air conditioning and plumbing problems.
Brook Gasteon is also a tenant.
“There were like, literal, like, outside bugs like roly polys. I’ve never seen a roly poly inside a home," she said.
Tenants said rents are roughly $1,500 to $2,200 a month. They’re withholding half, they said until something is done.
The Property management company, 312 Real Estate, said it takes maintenance issues seriously and it will correct the problems.
