(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Gary, Indiana police officer was shot Monday afternoon, and authorities had at least one suspect in custody.
Police said Sgt. William Fazekas was listed in stable condition Monday at a hospital after being hit in the shoulder.
The incident occurred around 1 p.m. in the 1500 block of West 5th Avenue when an officer called out an “active shooter situation” which unfolded in front of them, Gary police said.
An officer who was in the area saw a vehicle strike another vehicle and activated his emergency lights, police said. Someone in one of the vehicles opened fire, striking the officer in the shoulder.
Fazekas is a 32-year-veteran of the department who is assigned to the violent crimes division, police said.
One suspect was in custody, and a manhunt reportedly was underway for a second individual.
