(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - New Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has added 17 requests to the list of banned vanity license plate combinations.
The 17 identified in the last month join more than 7,000 other combinations of letters and numbers not allowed by the Secretary of State. The office rejected 383 requests last year.
“We love the creativity and pride Illinoisans take in choosing their personalized license plates, but a small percentage fail to meet the standards of good taste and decency,” Giannoulias told the Daily Herald.
Secretary of State staff are hip to those who try to spell banned words with numbers, backwards or not in English. The paper says less than 1% of the more than 54,000 requests for personalized or vanity plates were rejected last year, a lower number than in the prior two years. A spokesman said requests were abnormally high when more people were spending their days at home.
