CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Billionaire Republican businessman Ken Griffin has finally made his pick for Illinois governor public. Not surprisingly, it’s Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin.
Even before he formally sat down and talked with Irvin, Griffin had good things to say about Aurora’s first Black mayor and his background as a veteran and a former prosecutor.
Now, they have met, and Griffin has issued a statement saying, “Richard Irvin is the best person to lead our state in this election cycle.”
He said this isn’t just about beating the current governor, J.B. Pritzker, “this is about having a person in office who is going to put the people of our state first.” Griffin also called Irvin a person who’s going to make the tough calls and do what’s needed to end the senseless violence across the state.
Griffin, Illinois’ richest person, is putting a lot of money where his mouth is. He has donated $20 million to the Irvin campaign right now. Incumbent Democrat Pritzker, also a billionaire, has already put $90 million into his campaign.
