CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Governor J.B. Pritzker downplayed former President Donald Trump’s endorsement of Darren Bailey in Tuesday’s republican primary to determine who will face him in November.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Chicago Pride Parade, Pritzker pointed out that Trump did not win Illinois in both the 2016 and 2020 presidential races.
“For a Republican candidate to accept his endorsement, seems to me an acknowledgement on his part that he’s willing to go down a terrible rabbit hole that will sink the Republican Party,” Pritzker said.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Trump is trying to rack up points by endorsing the frontrunner Bailey so close to the election.
“The fact that he endorses someone when the polls are obvious that he’s going to win three days later…that’s a joke,” said Lightfoot.
U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth said anyone who courts Trump’s support tells her they don’t put country ahead of their self-interest. The Democrat expects the Supreme Court’s ruling on abortion to motivate voters.
“I hope that the Supreme Court decision energizes anybody who cares about fundamental rights in this country, not just the Democratic base,” Duckworth said.
Secretary of State candidate Alexi Giannoulias saw last week’s decision shaking things up.
It’s a Summer election, which Illinois has never had, and I think a lot of people were sort of not really attuned coming out of COVID,” said Giannoulias.
