(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago police say a gun turn-in event over the weekend netted more than 170 firearms.

In the latest buy-back, police offered $100 gift cards for each gun turned in — no questions asked. The turn-in was held at Hope Community Church in the Austin community.

Of note, says Glen Brooks, a Chicago Police Department official, was the appearance of a grandmother who showed up and turned in a brown bag. Inside were two guns.

“She had found these weapons in their home. Whether it was her children’s or grandchildren’s, she determined they did not need them,” Brooks said Monday. “We don't know the backstory of those weapons, but what we do know is this: Those guns will never, ever be used to harm her or kill anybody.”

Since January, Chicago police officers have recovered more than 8,200 guns, a 4% increase over last year, the department says.

Police have made more than 3,800 gun-related arrests.
