(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago police say a gun has turned up in Lake View almost three decades after it was reported stolen 2,000 miles away.

The Chicago Police Department got the call last Thursday. Somebody found a handgun at a building that was being renovated in the 3000 block of North Lincoln Avenue, CPD spokesman Tom Ahern says.

“The trace of the firearm revealed that the weapon was originally reported stolen by the Los Angeles Police Department back in August of 1995,” he said Monday.

August 17, 1995, to be exact.

Area 3 detectives are investigating.
