PALATINE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- New career paths are taking flight at Harper College in Palatine and catching the eye of some local politicians.

The college is now entering the third semester of its Drone Technology and Applications program.

“This certificate program gives students the skills that they need to enter this fast-growing drone industry," said Mukali Maitha, Associate Professor of Geography and program coordintor.

“The first field that really opened up for a lot of users was the photography market-using drones for taking aerial shots, both photographs and videos. The real estate sector started using that a lot.”

He also said insurance companies, as well as police and fire departments across the country, have also began adopting drone technology to their operations.

The program is only one of two in Illinois, and prompted a visit from Congressman Sean Casten and Federal Aviation Administration officials on Friday.

“It’s quite exciting for us,” Maitha said. “It gives us a chance to show what we have and attract students.”
