(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Police in far northern Harvard, Ill., fatally shot a man who killed his girlfriend Saturday night, officials said.
Chief Tyson Bauman said five officers responded to a 911 call from a home on Dewey Street at around 11:30 p.m.
When they arrived, they saw a man lying on top of his girlfriend while holding a knife outside of the home, Bauman said.
Police said the unnamed man refused to obey officers’ orders to drop the knife and get off the woman.
“He made some assertive movements toward the woman, and that’s when the officer discharged their firearm,” Bauman said.
The man died at the scene. The woman died at the hospital.
While the McHenry County Major Investigation Assistance Team reviews the matter, the officer who fired his weapon is on administrative duty.
Bauman told WBBM police had not been called to that address before.
