(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Waukegan police are asking for the public’s help in finding the persons responsible for a shooting that left a high school volleyball coach dead over the weekend.

Twenty-three-year old Niolis Collazo was in one of two cars hit by gunfire late Saturday night at 10th and Lewis, police said. The two cars had been traveling in different directions.

In a news release, Police Chief Edgardo Navarro said the driver of the other car was a male who was not hit.

But Collazo was struck by gunfire, and she was taken to Vista East Medical Center, where she died.

Mental health sessions are being offered to staff and students at Waukegan High School and a middle school. Collazo was a counselor at the middle school and an assistant volleyball coach at the high school.

She graduated from Waukegan High School a few years ago and had been a boys volleyball coach at the school. She was also a counselor with Youth Guidance’s “Working on Womanhood” program at Smith Middle School.

Waukegan police are asking for tips, even anonymously. Anyone with information can call the department’s tip line at 847-360-9001; the Police Department TIP App by texting 847411 and using the keyword WPDTIP; or by calling Lake County Crime Stoppers at 847-662-2222.
