(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Nearly $60 million in state grants is being awarded for 118 local park projects throughout Illinois, to help communities acquire land and develop recreational opportunities.

The money will represent the largest round of Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grants in the program’s 36-year history.

Chicago and its surrounding counties are in line for more than $34 million in grants from this program.

“By sharing the cost of building local parks, especially in economically depressed communities, the state is reinforcing the message that everyone belongs in nature — and everyone deserves outdoor spaces they can enjoy and be proud of,” said Illinois Department of Natural Resources Director Natalie Finnie.

The funding will cover 100% of eligible projects located in economically distressed communities, which will impact 22 underserved locations throughout Illinois.
