
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After 12 straight days of more than 100 daily deaths from the coronavirus, on Sunday it's under 100.
The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 79 additional COVID-19-related deaths on Sunday and 6,003 new confirmed and probable cases.
Dec. 10 saw the highest number of daily deaths from COVID-19 over the past 12 days with 196 deaths. Since the pandemic’s start, the IDPH has reported a total of 900,370 cases, including 15,202 deaths.
Over the past 24 hours, 78,079 tests were performed for a total 12,434,525. As of Friday night, 4,389 people were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 991 patients were in the intensive care unit and 546 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday issued an emergency approval of Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine, which is being prepared for shipping around the country. The much-needed shots are expected to be given starting Monday, just three days after the FDA authorized their emergency rollout.
