Downstate man sentenced to 18 months in prison for participating in Jan. 6 Capitol riot

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A man from Ottawa, Illinois has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for his actions during the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Matthew Capsel, 28 like many others involved, posted videos on social media. According to court documents, he recorded himself fighting with members of the National Guard.

In one recording, he’s heard saying, “Hold the line, don’t run.” Capsel was sprayed with mace.

Prosecutors say in the days after January 6, he continued posting about it, writing, “On the 6[th] good men had to do a bad thing …”

He went by Mateo Q Capsel on social media. Capsel pleaded guilty to “interfering with a law enforcement officer during a civil disorder.”

His attorney wrote he “feels like an idiot’ for having done what he did.”

Capsel He joins nearly 900 others who have been charged or convicted for their involvement.
