(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois residents who are targeted with deepfake pornography, or “doxing,” would have new remedies under legislation that has advanced in Springfield.

There are two separate digital privacy measures.

One would allow victims of doxing, which refers to intentionally publishing someone’s personal information without their consent with the intent to harass, to sue for damages.

State Sen. Julie Morrison, a Democrat from Lake Forest and sponsor of the measure, said, “It is absolutely critical for our laws to evolve with the changing nature of the cyber world.”

The second bill would amend current law concerning so-called “revenge porn” by adding terminology for “intentionally digitally altered” sexual images.

If someone creates and publishes fake sexual images, then they could be sued by a victim.

The measures now await Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s signature.
