(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Driver’s services facilities run by the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office will remain closed longer this month because of the surge in COVID infections.

The secretary of state previously closed the facilities Jan. 3 and planned to reopen them Jan. 18. Now, the shutdown will be extended to Monday Jan. 24, or Tuesday Jan. 25 for offices that run on Tuesday-Saturday schedules.

“After careful consideration and out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to extend the closures of offices and Driver Services facilities an additional week,” Secretary of State Jesse White said in a news release Thursday. “The health and safety of employees and the public remains my top priority.”

White said three Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) facilities will open on Tuesday, Jan. 18, for in-person CDL services only — in Rockford, Springfield and Marion.

For Illinois residents, many vehicle-related transactions, such as renewing license plates, can be done online. White has extended driver’s license and ID card expiration dates to March 31 as his office works through a backlog.

Before the shutdown, driver’s services facilities had required people to reserve appointment times, with exemptions for seniors, veterans and people with disabilities.
