SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Penalties are being eased for private schools in Illinois found in violation of the state's masking requirements.
The Illinois State Board of Education adjusted its policy for private schools that fail to comply with Governor Pritzker’s COVID-19 mask mandate.
Previously, schools would immediately lose their status and be deemed ‘unrecognized’ by the state.
Now, private schools will have the same policy as public schools and be given a 60 day probation period where they’ll be required to submit a corrective plan.
ISBE spokeswoman Jackie Matthews told the Tribune the update will give private schools more time to work with the Board of Education on coming into compliance.
The decision comes a week after a Kendall County judge ordered the Board to reinstate Parkview Christian Academy in Yorkville, which had recently lost its status and been deemed ‘non-recognized’.
As of last week, ISBE listed eight private schools resisting the order as ‘non-recognized’, while four public schools districts were ‘on probation’.
