(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Gov. JB Pritzker on Thursday said workers at three state veterans homes are getting reinforcements: members of the Illinois National Guard.

The National Guard members will be in place at all of the sites by next week, the governor said, to help workers deal with clusters of COVID-19 cases.

The news came as the state reported another spike in the daily number of coronavirus cases — 11,101, including nearly 200 additional deaths.

Pritzker confirmed a 33rd coronavirus-related death at the LaSalle veterans home, as a significant outbreak continues there. Thirty-three of 98 residents at the facility have tested positive for the virus, as well as three staff members, the governor said.

The governor earlier this week dismissed the idea of deploying the National Guard to assist the homes. He said his administration had a change of heart, and will send Guard members also to Quincy and Manteno, beginning Monday.
