CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — For the first time in nearly 16 months, the state of Illinois reported zero deaths from COVID-19.
The number of deaths from the novel coronavirus are reported daily. On Monday, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported no deaths for July 4. That is the first time that’s happened since March of 2020, the same month the first lockdown began in the state.
The Chicago Sun-Times looked at the numbers and reported that it was 476 days since the state had last tallied zero deaths for a single day.
The newspaper also noted, however, that some hospitals may be late in reporting deaths because of the long holiday weekend; so, the zero-count may not hold.
And the latest numbers from the state health department show 16 deaths statewide — 14 of them in Cook County.
The Illinois Department of Public Health says 63.7 percent of the eligible population — 12 and older — have received at least one dose of vaccine.
