(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A rise in the number of new COVID cases in Illinois for the sixth straight week has the head of the state's public health department increasingly concerned.
The latest weekly number of new COVID cases in Illinois is nearly 25,000 — about 5,000 higher than the previous week.
Lake County joins DuPage as the second Chicago-area county classified by the state as having an elevated risk of COVID transmission.
Dr. Amaal Tokars, the acting director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, said the number of people in Illinois hospitals because of COVID also keeps rising.
She added that many COVID patients in hospitals are either not vaccinated or are not up-to-date on their boosters.
