ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A northwest suburban teacher has submitted his resignation, because he does not want to comply with Governor Pritzker's mandate for educators to get vaccinated against COVID-19 or be tested weekly.
Under Governor Pritzker's mandate, all educators and school employees must be vaccinated against COVID-19 by Sunday, Sept. 19, or be subject to weekly COVID-19 testing.
As a response, a longtime teacher, who works at South Middle School in Arlington Heights Elementary District 25, has put in his resignation and will retire Friday, Sept. 24.
According to the Daily Herald, the male teacher also announced his resignation and reasoning in an email to parents; which prompted Todd Witherow, a District 25 parent and former school board candidate, to launch an online petition calling on the district to challenge the governor's mandates.
Meanwhile, a District 25 spokesman said 81 percent of all district staff and 88 percent of teachers in the district are vaccinated.
