(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A man from the Springfield area is the latest Illinoisan to be charged in the Jan. 6 siege on the U.S. Capitol.

Federal authorities said 43-year-old Shane Jason Woods of Auburn was arrested Thursday. He allegedly was among protesters who stormed the Capitol as Congress was formalizing the 2020 presidential election results.

Woods allegedly tripped and pushed to the ground a U.S. Capitol police officer who was chasing someone after she was sprayed in the face with an irritant.

He also allegedly tackled a news photographer who was part of the media covering the disturbance.

“As depicted in publicly available video, Woods … ran into and tackled the cameraman, causing him to fall and drop his camera,” a news release said.

Woods is charged with federal offenses that include assault on a law enforcement officer; assault in special maritime and territorial jurisdiction; and engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds.

He was expected to make his initial federal court appearance in Illinois on Friday.

Woods is at least the 10th person from Illinois to be charged by federal authorities for the Capitol attack.
