(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An Indiana State Trooper was killed Friday afternoon while attempting to stop a car involved in a pursuit.
State Police Sgt. Brian Walker said the trooper, James Bailey, was assisting with traffic control on Interstate 69, north of Fort Wayne, where there had been several weather-related crashes.
“While Trooper Bailey was assisting with traffic, he became aware of a vehicle pursuit coming in his direction, and Trooper Bailey was able to get out of his vehicle and attempt to de-escalate that pursuit by deploying stop-sticks,” Walker said. “During his actions, Trooper Bailey was struck by that suspect’s vehicle and was critically injured at the scene.”
The 50-year-old trooper died at a hospital. He’d been with the state police for over 15 years.
“This is a tremendously sad day for the entire Indiana State Police family,” said Indiana State Police Supt. Douglas Carter in a press release. “We will band together, as we always do, in support of Trooper Bailey’s family, friends and coworkers.”
The driver, 42-year-old Dewaine Sands, of Marion, Ind., was arrested at the scene and is being held at the DeKalb County Jail.
So far, he’s been charged with resisting law enforcement and causing death to a law enforcement officer.
