(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- As Indiana reported the highest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, Gov. Eric Holcomb is imposing more restrictions starting Sunday and lasting one month.
Holcomb said the restrictions include stricter limits on gatherings, including high school football and basketball games. Larger gatherings will be permitted if local health officials agree, he said.
The governor is also urging people to avoid in-person holiday gatherings, or at least strictly limit them.
He says Indiana's rising case and infection numbers are largely due to too many people ignoring precautions to limit the spread of the virus.
Indiana reported more than 5,100 coronavirus cases and 31 more deaths on Wednesday.
The state also announced that Munster Community Hospital will be among five hospitals in Indiana to get the first doses of the eventual Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for front-line workers and patients at highest risk.
