INDIANAPOLIS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Lawmakers in the Indiana House have voted overwhelmingly to set new limits on adult businesses.
The vote was 84-8 to set location limits on adult businesses, where they would not be allowed within 1,000 feet of schools, daycare facilities, parks, clubs like YMCAs and any youth sports or recreation facilities.
The sponsor, state Rep. Mike Speedy, who is a Republican from Indianapolis, said studies show adult-oriented businesses attract crime, drug use, prostitution, human trafficking and other problems.
This follows a yearslong unsuccessful effort to keep one such business, Hustler Hollywood, out of Indianapolis. It opened next to a Chuck E. Cheese.
The Times of Northwest Indiana reported state Rep. Matt Pierce, a Democrat from Bloomington took issue with the graphic language in the bill defining sexual device.
He said if it were to become law, it would be illegal to put the Indiana code in school libraries.
The legislation now goes to the state senate.
