Inmates explain how they escaped from Fulton County Jail

LEWISTOWN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Two of the four inmates at the Fulton County Jail, in central Illinois, who escaped last week and were on the loose for five days, explained how they did it.

Jesse Davis, 35, Cody Villalobos, 26, Eugene Roets, 23, and Zachary Hart, 36, escaped last Wednesday from Fulton County Jail, before all being recaptured and placed back at the jail.

"We're housed in here and all we've got is four walls to look at."

Now, two men claiming to be Jessie Davis and Cody Villalobos called WMBD in Peoria to share how they say they escaped and why they said they did it. The station said there was no reason not to believe them, as the call came from the jail and the men provided details of their crimes.

They said it was a spur-of-the-moment thing. One said they were "like kids on an adventure.”

The man claiming to be Davis said it all started when a heavy, unbolted table fell and hurt two inmates, one of them being Hart. Davis said he, Villalobas, and Hart were then placed in a new cell and the toilet fell off the wall.

"There was a hole in the wall behind the toilet, which led to a catwalk and the catwalk leads to a hatch. The hatch was left open, [the] toilet was not secured to the wall or anything, and the basement was the door to the garage that was just opened, unlocked," he told WMBD.

So, he said, they took advantage of it.

“Why would you put us in a cell block that we’re not even supposed to be in, that when we walk up and touch the toilet, it just falls off the wall. And you just sit there and look out a dark hole and you wonder what in the hell is going on?” asked the man who identified as Villalobos.

Davis said the escape was not planned.

“There wasn’t a breakout, just simply moved it to the side and crawled out the hole,” said the man who identified as Davis.

And Davis added their escape was actually negligence on the part of the sheriff’s office, for failing to fix the problem that allowed them to get out.

“We’re not bad people. Negligence and recklessness on [the Fulton County Jail’s] end. They failed to fix whatever the problem was that allowed us to do whatever we did. That’s point-blank period,” Davis said.
